lapsang souchon
Initially alerted to the existence of the tea called lapsang souchon by Colin Hay's lovely song "Beautiful World," I did not think too hard about it until I saw it in our little local tea house here in New Haven. It is a tea that has been smoked rather than dried or fermented (I don't really know the specifics, just trust me it's smoked), and as a result it smells very smoky in its dried form.
I have never tasted it until today, when, feeling brave, I ordered me a cup of it. In its brewed form it smelled like a salami stuck in a chimney. It tasted like a campfire. You should try it at least once.
It is my favorite. Andy hates it -- he says it is like drinking an ashtray. I counter by reminding him that what he likes so much about Scotch is its smokiness, and how is this tea different? He begs to differ.

I love lapsang souchong. And also discovered it through Colin Hay's song and then went to get some at Oolongs. You were one of the first links to come up when I tried to find more information on the tea.
Sweet... a little lapsang souchon on days like this really helps life.
